Frigid winter winds swept over an already chilled Gotham City. Random street crimes were running at an all-time high, despite the holidays. Down below, in the city's frozen sewers, Oswald Cobblepot, known as The Penguin, planned more mayhem and schemed the take over of the fightened metropolis. His loyal army of missle-packing Penguin Commandos and the bizarre Red Triangle Circus Gang are energized by the evil genius of the web-footed orphan. A desperate call to Batman goes up. Partner with Batman to salvage Gotham City from The Penguin's cold-hearted plot. Guide him in swift, life-like moves from dark alleys to rooftops in vivid scenes based on the hit movie, “Batman Returns”. Control his combat style, and help conduct relentless interrogations of The Penguins many allies. Use the Batcave computer to input clues, analyze evidence, and review enemy bios. You're in charge of weapons, too. Stock Batman's Utility belt with enough heat to match the diverse fighting styles of The Penguin and cold-blooded, sewer-dwelling minions. Gotham City is in trouble.

Batman Returns is a game is for one player only. This is a side scroller game. Most enemies you faced besides bosses died with one or attacks. Bosses went down pretty quick if you had the right power ups. Through out the game you had fire hydrants and boxes for items that Batman usually carries in his utility belt. Some of the items you get are, a bataring heat seeking bataring, bats, which come out of your cape, and smoke bombs. All of these are very useful but most of them will not work on boss enemies. You also get a bat hook like he carried in the movie to get you to higher places that you can not jump to. This is a very useful item and you can also swing on it and kick un suspecting enemies. You really didn't have to fight too many hard bosses in the game, really is a Huge Clown, Cat Woman, a few times, and Penguin and his big Duck Ride.

The Penguin and Catwoman are teaming up to wreak havoc on Gotham City and it's up to you, as Batman, to stop them. Lead the caped crusader through seven challenging stages, fighting dozens of goons and hoods on your way to capturing the ringleaders. Use your Batarang and Batdiscs for ranged attacks, or get in closer for some hand-to-hand combat with the most ruthless enemies the Dark Knight has ever seen. Just make sure you've got enough energy to take on Catwoman and the Penguin, because they're both tougher than they look. All of Batman's skills, powers, and intelligence will be put to the test in Batman Returns. Fire up the Batmobile and be on the lookout for the Bat Signal as you do whatever it takes to keep Gotham City safe.

Feel like you want to be a superhero, now you can, with Batman Returns, this game is single player and allows you to go through several levels of Bat fun. Take on the Red Triangle Circus Gang before they wipe you out. Use various Bat tools ranging from the Bat mobile to the Batarang. Each level concludes with facing an archenemy. While pursuing the Red Triangle Gang you able use the weaponry from the Batmobile to annihilate this enemy. The majority of the levels use a two dimensional graphics set up, while the rest of the game relies on the 3-D graphics to allow more freedom for usage.

The music in the Batman Returns, although it's not directly taken from the film, fits extremely well with the dark and ambient visuals. Although not much of it is memorable, you will find that the nice little tunes keep you motivated enough to continue playing. A few of the songs later on are actually a bit creepy. The title screen music fits the film, the tone of the game, and Christmas also. (As the game and the film both take place during Christmas.)

The graphics in Batman Returns were pretty reasonable; Batman was very large and looked like his movie counterpart. The backgrounds were very dark and true to Batman's flair. Plenty of movie scenes were capture in the game like the mall, and the sewers where the Penguin resides. The enemies also resemble some of the goons you faced in the movie.
